For the price, it offers all you can expect from a small SUV, with excellent engineering and mechanical execution. Both the four-cylinder and V6 engines are proven, and gas mileage is good. The six-speed automatic transmission is smooth. The suspension offers a tight and comfortable ride, and the handling is nimble and steady. This compact crossover sticks out as the oddball among its fellow Mazdas with their rakish profiles, beefy fender flares and wide-mouth grilles. That's because the Tribute has been adopted from a different family. Remove the badges from the Mazda Tribute and what you have is a Ford Escape, except without the Ford's many appealing high-tech features. The 2011 Mazda Tribute i models are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 171 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque. The Mazda Tribute s Grand Touring gets a 3.0-liter V6 good for 240 hp and 233 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic is standard.Front-wheel drive is standard on all Tributes, while all but the i Sport can be equipped with all-wheel drive. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 22 mpg city/28 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined with front-wheel drive and 20/26/23 with all-wheel drive. The front fenders are squared, which makes it easy to see the front corners when parking; and good visibility with no blind spots out the back is another virtue.
Unlike many other Mazda vehicles, the Tribute does not get a large grille that makes the front of the car look like it is smiling. This is owed partially to the more blocky styling of the Tribute. This vehicle's blocky shape and upright driving position are indicative of the truck-based SUVs. The Tribute has been thoroughly updated since then with refreshed styling, dramatically improved interior quality and more potent engines, but the underlying vehicle has remained the same. The 2011 Mazda Tribute has a clean, attractive appearance. The grille is black, in Mazda's wedge shape that suggests a grin, with a chrome Mazda gullwing logo centered in a chrome strip across the top. The halogen headlights, small and simple trapezoids, complement that shape. Under the nose there's a slim valance that contains the halogen fog lamps. The rear bumper has a flat shelf with a rubber strip, making climbing up to the roofrack easier; that rack is standard on all models but the i Sport.
The Tribute cabin has plenty of room and a practical setup, with seating for five and a 60/40-split folding rear seat. Everything the driver needs is easy to see, reach, and operate. The gauges are clean and easy to read, with a neat tachometer and speedometer, split by small fuel and temperature gauges. It's all clean and simple. The center stack contains everything that's needed, with dials for the main controls of the sound system and climate system, and buttons that have simple standard icons and are big enough to see and use. It's a blessed relief, nowadays, to find controls that aren't unnecessarily challenging. This simplicity makes for a safer vehicle, because the driver's concentration isn't interrupted by confusion or problem solving.
The i Sport comes standard with 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, foglamps, keyless entry, full power accessories, cruise control, air-conditioning, tilt-only steering wheel and a four-speaker sound system with CD player and auxiliary audio jack. The i Touring adds a roof rack, privacy glass, a six-way power driver seat, a cargo cover and a seven-speaker sound system with six-disc CD changer and steering-wheel audio controls. The Grand Touring trims add heated mirrors, a sunroof, heated front seats, leather upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel, auto-dimming rearview mirror and satellite radio. The s Grand Touring gets a V6 and a towing prep package.

Even the strong V6 with four-wheel drive delivers reasonable fuel economy, 18 mpg City, 23 mpg Highway, which is more than just decent, considering the Tribute so equipped is also capable of towing 3,500 pounds. And the hybrid is rated at 34 mpg City, 31 mpg Highway, which should appeal to those who do a fair amount of driving in and around town.
